Covid Lab Leak
About Covid Lab Leak
The COVID 19 lab leak hypothesis proposes that SARS CoV 2 accidentally escaped from a laboratory, specifically the Wuhan Institute of Virology WIV. The WIV conducted bat coronavirus research, some of which critics have characterised as gain of function. US intelligence agencies have reached differing conclusions: the FBI with moderate confidence, and the Department of Energy and later the CIA with low confidence, judged a laboratory associated origin most likely, while the National Intelligence Council and several other agencies judged natural exposure more likely, also with low confidence. The lack of a definitive intermediate host animal and the absence of a confirmed spillover event at the Huanan market are cited by proponents of the lab hypothesis. However, multiple scientific analyses of the virus genome and epidemiological patterns support natural origin. The debate has been politicized, affecting US China relations and scientific collaboration. Gain of function research oversight has increased. The origin may never be definitively determined.
