COVID New Zealand
About COVID New Zealand
New Zealand pursued an elimination strategy for COVID 19 under Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. The country implemented a strict nationwide lockdown on March 26, 2020, when it had about 200 confirmed cases. Borders were closed to all but citizens and residents. A 14 day managed isolation requirement was implemented for all arrivals. New Zealand achieved elimination, with 102 days of no community transmission in mid 2020. Subsequent outbreaks from border leaks were rapidly contained through short lockdowns. By the end of 2021, New Zealand had recorded fewer than 60 COVID deaths in a population of 5 million, among the lowest mortality rates in the OECD. The strategy had significant economic and social costs, including separation of families and reduced tourism. New Zealand began transitioning from elimination to suppression in late 2021 with the arrival of Delta. The Omicron wave in 2022 finally brought widespread transmission. The Ardern government response was widely praised internationally, though it also drew domestic criticism over border restrictions and later mandates.
