Fomite Transmission
About Fomite Transmission
Fomite transmission refers to the spread of pathogens through contaminated surfaces or objects. Early in the COVID 19 pandemic, fomite transmission was considered a major route, leading to widespread surface cleaning, disinfection of groceries, and package quarantine. In 2021 the CDC stated that the risk of surface transmission of COVID 19 is generally low, with respiratory droplets and aerosols the primary routes. The concern about fomites was based on studies showing SARS CoV 2 RNA could persist on surfaces for hours to days. However, detection of viral RNA does not necessarily indicate infectious virus. For influenza, rhinovirus, and RSV, fomite transmission plays a role but respiratory transmission dominates. Norovirus is notably transmitted through fomites and contaminated food. Measles virus can remain airborne for 2 hours. Some commentators criticised intensive surface disinfection during COVID 19 as hygiene theatre that diverted attention from ventilation. Understanding transmission routes is essential for effective infection control.
