Monkeypox 2022
About Monkeypox 2022
The 2022 mpox outbreak, formerly known as monkeypox, was the first time mpox spread widely outside of Africa. The outbreak was caused by Clade IIb of the monkeypox virus, a DNA virus related to smallpox. The first case was identified in the United Kingdom in May 2022 in a traveler returning from Nigeria. Cases were concentrated predominantly among men who have sex with men. By the time the WHO declared a PHEIC in July 2022, over 16,000 cases had been reported from 75 countries. The JYNNEOS smallpox vaccine was offered to groups at higher risk. The outbreak peaked in August 2022 and the WHO ended the PHEIC in May 2023. By mid 2023, reported cases exceeded 87,000, with approximately 140 deaths. The outbreak demonstrated how a neglected tropical disease could emerge globally and highlighted inequities in global health attention. In 2024, a more virulent Clade I outbreak in Central Africa prompted another PHEIC.
