Operation Warp Speed
About Operation Warp Speed
Operation Warp Speed was the US government initiative to accelerate COVID vaccine development. Announced in May 2020, the initiative committed approximately 18 billion to vaccine development and manufacturing. Moncef Slaoui, former GlaxoSmithKline vaccine executive, was appointed chief scientist. Gustave Perna, a four star general, managed logistics. Operation Warp Speed partnered with multiple vaccine developers including Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Johnson and Johnson, and Novavax. The initiative took on financial risk by funding manufacturing before efficacy was proven, allowing doses to be available immediately upon authorization. The Pfizer vaccine was authorized on December 11, 2020, less than 8 months after the initiative launched. Critics questioned the feasibility of the timeline. Early distribution in late 2020 and early 2021 was slower than initially projected, and the Biden administration later expanded the rollout. Operation Warp Speed is widely regarded as a successful government science initiative.
